One Good Deed..
From the September Newsletter…
….Earlier that day as we were getting ready to go on the beach, I walked ahead of Robert and passed this man trying to sweep some broken glass aside with his feet. I stopped and started talking with him. He shared that he had seen the broken glass…and jokingly said he was doing his “one good deed, for the day”. As he was cleaning, he said, “I would just feel bad if someone started their day at the beach and ended up with a cut foot and or flat tire. If my wife walked by or one of my children, I wouldn’t want them hurt and I wouldn’t want anyone else hurt as well.” I was so moved by his holding all of us as if we were his family. This is not what he came right out and said in his words, but it is what his actions were saying and it is what his words and heart were conveying. I walked back to our car and got our whisk broom and together we were able to sweep the broken glass into a piece of paper and throw it out. As we were cleaning, we were just chatting. But underneath the “small talk” - was an exchange of love. I know my day was deepened and changed because of my “chance meeting” with this man.
After saying good-bye, I began walking towards the beach contemplating the depth of what just happened in what might look like an ordinary and simple encounter. I felt so moved by this moment that I committed to start “One Good Deed a Day”. One Good Deed a Day - is an offering to each of us to see - how would our world be different if we looked out through the our eyes and saw the world as our family? What would we do different? What would we clean? How would we act?
We will start a new section on the new website called One Good Deed a Day. Please consider joining us. I offer each of us the opportunity to begin to put in practice our one good deed. Of course please don’t feel limited to one!! For me though, I feel that the practice of asking each day - have I done my one good deed - will begin to change how I am living in the world. We invite you to share this with us and then write to us and let us know how it is going. How does it feel? How is our world changing as we begin to open our eyes to others in this way?
We invite you to share with us your experiences. We hope that many of you will write to us (click here to do so) and we will post them on the website, so that we can all inspire one another to continue to live a more loving life.
